The Ones @ NY Academy of Art

Last Friday I went to the opening of The Ones, an exhibition of work by New York Academy of Art alumni from the classes of 1991, 2001, 2011.  Below are a few of my favorite pieces.  It's nice to see the school promote its alumni in this way, and to see the variety of mediums, and subjects these artists have tackled.

Alyssa Monks (MFA 2001), Reserve, 2011, oil on linen, 32 x 48 inches

an Healy (MFA 2011, Fellow 2012), Roosters, 2011, charcoal, 55 x 40 inches

Daniel Esquivia Zapata (MFA 2011), Chucho & Soledad, 2011, graphite, conte, gesso on mylar, 5.5 x 4.5 feet

Maggie Rose (MFA 2001), Epilogue, 2011, oil on linen, 22 x 28 inches

Mary Harju (MFA 2011), Shelter, 2011, mixed media on paper, 11 x 13 inches

What else?

Here are some shows I'm looking forward to visiting, and writing about, in the near future. Let me know if you hear of other exhibitions in NYC that should not be missed.

Resolve Exhibition at Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea

First of all it's great to see an exhibition featuring classical artists in Chelsea.  While this area is famous for its galleries and art shows, I would personally like to see more representational art work promoted here, and more shows like 'Resolve'.  This exhibition is curated by a gallery artist, Tony Curanaj, whose piece Nouveau Red is included in the show.  Alongside his piece are figurative, still life and landscape paintings by accomplished artists such as Jacob Collins, Michael Grimaldi and Steven Assael, as well as a couple sculptures and photographs.   I recommend this show to anyone interested in the contemporary realist art scene, mostly as an introduction to the genre and to some of its key players.
